If youre not familiar with Aglianico you're in for a treat. It is a densely colored richly flavored red grape that produces deep age-worthy wines like Taurasi and Aglianico del Vulture. Macaricos state-of-the art winery is producing some of the most intense and exciting Aglianico in whole the Basilicata region. His vineyards are perfectly situated halfway up the slopes of Monte Vulture. The ancient lava flows give this particular area some of the darkest soils in the region making it the source of some of the most forceful and elegant Aglianico wines. The vines for Macari have tiny yields and are some of the most densely planted (about 4 000 vines per acre) in the region. They are harvested in late October/early November (often when snows have already fallen at the top of the mountain.) This estate bottled Chateauneuf is a four grape blend of Grenache Syrah Mourvedre and Cinsault. Located to the north of the village of Chateauneuf du Pape on the Cabrieres plateau the Chteau Cabrires estate dates back to the 15th century. The vineyards are typical for the region with chalky soils strewn with large flint pebbles that virtually cover the ground. The vines average 45 years of age and yields are kept to about 30 hectoliters per hectare or about half the average yield. The pebbles absorb sunlight all day long and reflect warmth back on the vines at night which ripens the grapes to perfection. Grapes are hand picked and undergo two separate triages where only the most pristine berries are finally selected. After fermentation it is aged in small oak barrels for 12 months and then transferred to large barrels for an additional 24 months of aging before bottling. Chianti Classico Riserva 2003 San Crispino

Chianti Classico is not the same as mere Chianti. Classico means that the grapes were grown in the oldest delimited zone in the region and the production code is quite strict. Only vineyards situated on hillsides above 700 meters with advantageous orientation may be included. Chianti Classico must be 80% Sangiovese at a minimum vinification must take place in the zone as must all steps in production including aging. Vine density is spelled out as are maximum yields.
